1956 was a record sales year for the Ford's luxury brand, Lincoln. Borrowing styling cues from 1954's XM-800 show car, Lincoln extended the 1955 wheelbase three inches (out to 126 inches) and made the bodywork seven inches longer and three inches wider. Two series were available; the Capri that could be had in coupe or sedan form, and the new upmarket Premier that could also be optioned as a convertible. Both series ran 368ci big-block V8s and automatic transmissions, the engine producing a gross 285bhp. Lincolns were revered for their smooth, luxurious ride and performance and had their share of celebrity owners in the day, including Elvis Presley and Walt Disney who both had coupes.
