Though the original Toyota Corolla was introduced in 1966, it took until 1968 for the fastback version, known as the Sprinter, to come to market. Powered by the same 1077cc four-cylinder engine as the Corolla, the Sprinter could also be had with a floor-mounted four-speed manual or two-speed automatic transmission. Power output from the OHV, 8-valve design was 44kW. Australia was the first export market for these first Corollas with deliveries commencing late in 1966. Of course, it was only the beginning as these rear-drive early cars are now seen as collectible in their own right.
