Description
Gwynne was another of those delightful British off-shoot car manufacturers that added some colour to the scene in the early years of car production. Their primary business was that of pump manufacture however they also built rotary engines for war vehicles in World War 1. Based in London, car production commenced 1918, but by 1929 it had been phased out. Australia was earmarked as an export destination and several made their way to our shores. The standard Gwynne Eight was powered by a 950cc four-cylinder engine with a three-speed manual gearbox, while the higher specification Brooklands had a specially tuned version of the same engine- with a larger carburettor, higher-lift camshaft and larger valves being among the improvements. Contemporary research suggests that there are only 23 known Gwynnes surviving around the world, making them a rare sight even at historic meets. It is said only four roadworthy examples survive in Australia.
