Description

The Silver Shadow I was introduced in 1965 and was the first monocoque-construction vehicle from Rolls-Royce. It followed the massive, long-bonnet Silver Cloud series that had progressed through various incarnations to bow out as the Cloud III in 1966. The Silver Shadow I continued with the alloy V8 engine introduced in the 1959 Silver Cloud II. This engine started with a capacity of 6.2 litres, and by the time the Silver Shadow came along in 1977, it was displacing 6.75 litres. The Silver Shadow II, built between 1977 and 1981, was quite a modern Rolls-Royce compared with its predecessors. It had self-leveling, all-independent suspension and an all-disc braking system. The sumptuous interior was fitted with luxuries that were rather advanced in the 1960s; power windows, power seats and air-conditioning. It was also the most complex Rolls-Royce built, and hit the road with a noticeable price increase over the old, platform chassis-based Cloud III, which continued, in more opulent form as the Phantom V and VI.
