Description
The 1946 model year Chevrolets provide a surreal insight into how America strove forward in the aftermath of World War 2, being the year that Chevy, along with other Detroit automobile manufacturers, went back into production mode. The Chevy range for '46 was based on the 1942 models, as the tooling was already installed and this would keep costs down. With the materials shortage post-war, it was a shrewd decision. 1942's 'Master Deluxe' was refreshed as the Stylemaster, the 'Special Deluxe' became the Fleetmaster and the previous Fleetline continued as a Fleetmaster sub-series. Aesthetically the most obvious difference to the pre-war models was found at the front with a re-designed grille section, while the mechanicals were basically unaltered.
Several bodystyles were available, including sedans, wagons, utilities (in Australia) and coupes. This range provided a steady return for Chevrolet's production, particularly as part-way in there was a strike action that held up the lines for several months. Almost 400,000 1946 Chevrolets were produced in the end.
