Description
The original BSA 'Gold Star' motorcycle was introduced in 1938 and continued in production after the Second World War. Its name was inspired by rider Wal Handley's 1937 feat of lapping Brooklands on a BSA Empire Star at an average speed exceeding 100mph. He was awarded a Gold Star pin for this achievement and the name took on a life of its own. Originally in larger 499cc form, in 1948 a 348cc version was introduced, mimicking the larger motor's all alloy construction and OHV layout. Several versions were offered; from touring to racing trim- no side car lugs were accommodated in the body, indicating the singular performance bent that would see the Gold Star become one of the most revered British sports bikes of the fifties. Production ceased in 1963.
