1972 Porsche 911T 'Targa' 2.4 Coupe

The ubiquitous 911 needs little introduction to motoring enthusiasts; having dominated the sports car segment since its debut on European streets. Introduced as a replacement for the four-cylinder 356 (Porsche's first model), the 911 was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963. Initially designated 901, the name was changed to 911 when Peugeot indicated that in France it had the exclusive rights to all three-digit model designations with a zero in the middle. Production of the 911 began in the second half of 1964, running an air-cooled 1991cc flat-six mounted aft of the rear axle and producing around 96kW. It was supported by the 912, which housed the last 1.6 litre flat-four from the 356 in a 911 body. As the premier 911 gained power (118kW) in 1966's 'S' form, there was a call for a lower-spec 911 that retained six cylinders. The result was the 'T' which ran an 81kW version of the 2.0l, with the 96kW version becoming the 'L'. In 1969 the 'B' series was introduced and with it came a slightly increased wheelbase- the first real measure to curb the 911's tail swinging on-limit handling. With this change came a capacity increase to 2195cc across the board and the introduction of the mid-level 911 E. Outputs for each state of tune read 93kw for the T, 116kw for the E and 134kw for the S, with the 'Sportomatic' semi-auto optionally available on the T and E.
