Description
The 1929 model year was significant for Chevrolet as it introduced their first inline six-cylinder motor, which was to become the mainstay of the marque through to 1955's introduction of the small-block V8. Commonly known as the 'Stovebolt', it initially displaced 194cu in and was of an overhead valve design which was seen as technically advanced at the time. Harley Earl styled the 1929 cars, with ten body styles offered to house the new engine. It was rated at 46bhp- around 15 per cent more powerful than the four-pot Ford Model A of the same period. Importantly, the new Chevrolet started at only $10 more than its four-cylinder predecessor; period advertising quite rightly stated it was ?A six in the price range of a four? and it undercut contemporary six-cylinder rivals significantly on price. Nearly 850,000 1929 Chevrolets were built and, though not as successful in sales terms as the Ford Model A, it remains a popular and stylish vintage option.
