The Indian Spirit Chief was the result of the newly formed 'Indian Motorcycle Company of America' business which commenced trading in 1999. The result of a merger between nine different companies (including the California Motorcycle Company (CMC) and IMCOA Licensing Company, who was awarded the Indian trademark in 1998), production commenced on a new bike, the Indian Chief, in CMC's existing facilities. Initially the company purchased engines from the famous brand S & S (famous for their association with Harley-Davidson) and soon the Chief was joined by the Scout and Spirit to create a three-model Indian range. Unfortunately the company struggled financially and filed for bankruptcy in 2003.
