Description
Introduced at the London Motor Show in 1953, the ZA Magnette was the first MG car to utilise a monocoque chassis. The Magnette name had in the Thirties been used on K and N-Type MGs, however this was the first time the name was used as a model designation in its own right. The styling was said to follow Italian design inspiration and a 1.5-litre version of the new B-Series engine was installed, giving 60bhp via twin SU carburettors. Wood and leather featured in the interior design, while the four-speed manual gearbox offered synchromesh on the upper three gears. Independent front suspension combined with a live axle rear to give decent road-holding for its class. The ZA was replaced by the ZB in 1956, which offered slightly more power to go with further interior refinements.
