Description
Before 1945, the company which came to be known as Jaguar was known simply as 'SS Cars Limited'. Its best-known model, the open SS 100 was built from 1936 through to 1941 and utilised the chassis of the contemporary SS saloon (incidentally, known as the Jaguar), albeit shortened in length to add style and sportiness.
Initially available in '2.5-litre' form, the six-cylinder engine actually displaced 2663cc and was fitted with twin SU carburettors that were attached directly to the cylinder head.
For 1938 it was joined by a 3.5-litre (3485cc) version of the engine which proved capable of hitting 100mph.
Today these pre-Jaguar cars are revered for their history and story, as they were the precursors to one of the most famous luxury-sporting car brands in the world.
