Description
Launched in 1964, the Tiger was created by shoehorning a 164HP, 260 cubic (4.2 litre) Ford V8 engine into the Sunbeam Alpine bodyshell. Initiated by Ian Garrad, it was developed from two Alpine V8 prototypes built by Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles respectively, effectively making it a clone of the famous AC Shelby Cobra.Tigers were built by Jensen Motors at West Bromwich. A small number were also assembled in South Africa from CKD kits. Production of the MK1 Sunbeam Tiger ran from June 1964 until December 1966, with approximately 6,550 built, while just 536 of the Mk II Tiger with their larger 4.7 litre Ford V8 engines were manufactured from December 1966 until production ceased in June, 1967. The takeover of Rootes by Chrysler led to the untimely demise of the Tiger. Chrysler did not want to be seen to be building Ford-powered cars, and did not have a suitable engine of their own to fit into the tight Sunbeam Alpine engine bay at this stage of the model's production cycle.The Tiger is perhaps most famous for its role in the television series Get Smart.
