Description
Oldsmobile's Cutlass range is perhaps best known for its contribution to the American Muscle Car scene, in the shape of the 442. The numerals stood for; four-speed, four-barrel, twin-exhaust and Olds designed it as a competitor for Pontiac's immensely successful GTO series.
The 442 nameplate debuted on the second generation Cutlass and was retained when the third-generation Cutlass was announced in 1968.
In addition to the 442 (which was originally based off a police-specification) the third-generation Cutlass could be had in basic F-85 form, with a mid-range 'S' and top-spec 'Supreme' also offered. The two-doors rode on a 112-inch wheelbase (four-door: 116-inch) and were sleeker than before with semi-fastback styling.
Cutlass could be had with an economy-minded 250ci straight-six, but could also be optioned with the venerable 350ci V8. A 400ci was also available early in the third-generations existence; however by 1970 that was discontinued so the 350 or big-banger 455 with two or four-barrel carburetion were offered for the 1971 model year.
