Description
For 1959, Ford's debuted its new full-size flagship, the Galaxie. Sharing many similarities with the contemporary Fairlane, the Galaxie was offered in Sedan, Hardtop and convertible forms- a retractable hardtop version was also available.
This initial generation was quickly replaced for the 1960 model year. The updated look left the Fifties styling behind and introduced a larger range of engines from a 223ci inline six through to the big-block 'FE' range of V8s, the ultimate 427ci version becoming available for 1963.
By this stage the Galaxie badge was applied to all full-size Fords, with trim levels denoted by further '500' or '500 XL' identification.
With a wider body than its predecessor, the 1965-on series showcased a new front-end design with twin headlights per corner that were stacked vertically. This basic body was further refined through to 1968, by which stage the Galaxie-based top-end models (LTD, 500 XL and Country Squire) had adopted the period popular hideaway headlights; the base Custom 500 made do without.
Six engine options were available, ranging from a 240ci six and new 302ci small-block V8 to the 390bhp 427 and 340bhp 'Thunderbird' 428. Three or four-speed manuals were offered alongside the optionally available 'Cruise-O-Matic' three-speed auto. Many felt the 390ci version of the 'FE' big-block series was best matched to the cruising style of the full-sized Ford, offering good torque and response with smoothness and better economy than the larger engines.
