Manufactured by Butterfields of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, Levis motorcycles were in production from 1911 through to 1940 and the outbreak of World War Two, where the company was merged with Hewins Engineering. The story goes that Norton designer Bob Newey had created the Levis whilst in Norton's employ, however the design wasn't approved. As a result, Newey left and set up his own motorcycle company with the Butterfield family. Initially a producer of two-stroke bikes, from 1928 Levis built four-stroke 'singles of 247cc and 346cc capacities. Larger 498cc and 600cc examples also became available, and the company's reputation for building strong, reliable bikes was proved with several racing successes.
