Californian Bruce Meyers, a WW2 veteran with a talent for boat-building, took the concept of a dune buggy and improved on it with the invention of his 'Manx' buggy. Designed with a fibreglass monocoque body with a structural steel frame attached to VW suspension and running gear, the earliest Manx buggies were far lighter and more manoeuvrable than earlier buggies, though proved costly to produce. Costs were reduced with the adaptation of a shortened VW chassis/floorpan. The design proved a hit, though unfortunately for Meyers a number of imitators cropped up to cash in on the concept. Regardless, the original Manx is the most revered, and is equally at home on the beach or in the bush.
