The Morris Major Elite debuted in April 1962, taking over from the Morris Major Series 1 and 2 before it. Along with the similar Austin Lancer, these cars were made in Australia and were initially badge engineered versions of the UK market Wolseley 1500/Riley One-Point-Five. The Elite assumed the mantle of the Austin Lancer as Australian BMC dealerships became amalgamated around this time, eliminating the need for two separate model streams of what was essentially the same vehicle. A 1622cc four cylinder engine debuted in the Elite, and cosmetically the Elites were enhanced with a 'rocket' flash of colour on the tail-fins. Production continued until 1964 when the Morris 1100 took over.
