Description
The Volkswagen Type 2 - better known to Australians as the Kombi - was introduced in 1949 with the same reliable running gear as found in the Beetle and soon carved a niche as a reliable, versatile and endearing workhorse. The Kombi's bodywork was of unitary construction and was available as a van, bus or pick-up, although as time went on these basic models were expanded into a bewildering array of offshoots, including the Microbus, the Samba bus and the Transporter. The most collectible variant is the DeLuxe Microbus version featuring skylight windows and a Golde sunroof and the earliest of these had 23 windows in total. In 1964 the rear corner windows were deleted and these models, built before 1967, have become known to collectors as the 21-window, consisting of a split windscreen, two front door windows, four side windows per side, a single rear window and no less than eight skylights in the roof. Other upgrades included additional chrome strips on the beltline and a dash mounted clock. The original Type 2 remained in production until 1979 and today has a cult following around the world.
