1953 Sunbeam Talbot Mark IIA Saloon

The Rootes Group took over the ailing Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq group in the mid-1930s and continued producing cars under the Talbot and Sunbeam names, with an at times confusing array of models courtesy of some clever badge engineering. Sunbeam-Talbot's early post-war models were all based on pre-war cars like the 2-litre, but a new range of models was announced in July 1948, with modern streamlined styling. Designated the Sunbeam-Talbot 80 and 90, both were available either as saloons or stylish drophead coupes, the latter finished by the renowned coachbuilders Thrupp & Maberly. The 80 was powered by an 1185cc four-cylinder motor while the 90 used a 1944cc unit, both derived from older Sunbeam models. In 1950, the 80 was dropped and the 90 improved to become the Mark II, with a new chassis that featured independent front suspension. At the same time, the engine was enlarged to 2267cc and power went up to 70 bhp at 4000 rpm. The Mark II can be distinguished by two small air intakes either side of the main radiator grille. In total, 5,493 Mark II 90s were made before the interim Mark IIA was announced in 1952 and the model ultimately finished up as the Mark III, with the final example leaving the Coventry factory in 1957. The Sunbeam-Talbots enjoyed a successful career in rallying, with the 90 winning the Alpine Trials in 1948, 1949 and 1950, culminating in outright victory in the 1955 Monte Carlo Rally.
