Description
The XB GS continued the 'Grand Sport' Rally Pack model option which had been successfully introduced by the XW range in the late 1960s. Seen as a sporty option without GT levels of performance (or insurance premiums) the GS range could be applied to six-cylinder as well as V8 models and included some GT interior equipment to lend it a sportier feel than standard.
For XB the GS pack could be added to Falcon 500 Futura and Fairmont and included the usual GT-style instrumentation, sports steering wheel and bonnet scoops along with a bespoke striping package and sports wheels.
While essentially a styling package, one could option up the GS to offer a near-GT driving experience. A two-barrel 351ci V8 was the top V8, and a four-speed manual, nine-inch diff and sports suspension also appeared on the options lists. With this combination the GS became a serious performer and today they are well respected as Aussie muscle cars in their own right.
