In mid-1969 Ford released a new range of facelifted Falcons and Fairmonts, the new XWs sporting a bolder, more aggressive new look than the outgoing XT. The softer lines of previous models were sharpened up, with harder edges at the front and rear (now with square tail lights for the first time) and a recessed rear window design. The basic Falcon and Falcon 500 models were joined by a newcomer badged the Futura, which sat between the Falcons and the top of the range Fairmont. Ford continued with the smaller sixes but buyers seeking more go opted for the 302-cid V8, while the GT package continued as the 'hero' car with the potent 351-cid Windsor V8 under the blacked-out bonnet for those looking for race-car levels of performance. The XW range saw a host of improvements introduced across the board, most notably a new dashboard with collapsible steering column, while the more upmarket Fairmont was equipped with Kelsey-Hayes ?Turbo-Cooled? front disc brakes. The Fairmont could be ordered with anything from a basic six to the 302-cid V8 lifted from the Mustang and critics raved about the so-called Windsor motor. Giving near GT performance levels, according to some pundits the 302 V8 was a better all round package for daily driving than the more highly tuned 351. The Fairmont and GT also shared most of the same interior appointments. Interest in classic Australian models like the XW Falcon continues to flourish, particularly for original survivors like the car on offer here.
