Ford's third generation Falcon was introduced for the 1966 model year and saw the model increase in size a little, with the long bonnet, short rear deck styling influenced by the hugely popular Mustang. The Falcon was available as a Sedan, Coupe and Station Wagon models, with two trim levels, the regular Falcon or more upmarket Futura, along with a choice of three engines (the 170-cid six, a 200-cid six and the classic small block 289-cid V8). Rated at a healthy 200 horsepower (in two barrel form), the V8 turned the relatively compact Falcon into a decent performer and came equipped with uprated brakes to cope with the extra power. The Futura Coupe was sold in either Club or Sports models and just 7,053 of the latter were built that year, representing just over 10 per cent of total Falcon production of 64,335 units. The Futura Sports Coupe actually resembles a two-door hardtop version of the local XR Falcon and could have been a logical successor to the earlier XP hardtops had Ford decided to bring it here. As an understated alternative to the more obvious Mustang, the Falcon Futura Sports Coupe makes a good case - it shares many of the same components and can easily be tuned to similar performance levels, whilst offering greater interior space and is of course a lot harder to find these days. While the Mustang may have received all the headlines, the Falcon even enjoyed a brief competition career, when Ford even backed a team in Trans-Am racing for 1966.
