In a break with tradition, MG came up with a modern, streamlined replacement for the MG TF in 1955. Based around a strong box-section chassis, with many parts sourced from the BMC parts bin, the MGA was both pretty to look at and immensely satisfying to drive and proved the equal of rivals from Triumph and Austin-Healey in the battle for supremecy in Britain in the late 1950s. Announced in September 1956, the MGA fixed-head coupe was a stylish GT variant, with the roof section made from a single pressing. Designed by Eric Carter of Morris Motors, this was the first fully enclosed MG since the 1930s and was, if anything, even more attractive than its roadster counterpart. In keeping with a tradition exemplified by Jaguar's XK sports cars, MGA fixed-head was more luxurious than its open-topped sibling, with wind-up windows, better sound deadening and even came with lockable doors. MG developed both the coupe and roadster models in parallel, answering criticism that the model lacked power with the new 1600 in 1950 - with 80 horsepower on tap, the 1600 could top 100mph and was equipped with front disc brakes to cope with the extra speed. The MGA coupe was well received, offering a higher top speed due to the slippery shape and better fuel economy, but always sold in small numbers. For example, in 1960 - when the car offered here was built - there were just 1,464 coupes built compared to 15,517 roadsters. As a consequence, few MGA coupes are seen on the roads or at club meetings today and they are always popular with enthusiasts and collectors alike. One of the most entertaining - and arguably best looking - British sports cars of the era, the MGA fixed-head is a wonderful touring car, perfect for weekend runs or club tours and is well catered for, with a healthy club scene in Australia.
