Founded in 1926, Maico is a largely forgotten German motorcycle manufacturer with a proud tradition of building high quality bikes and scooters before bankruptcy killed the concern in 1983. Initially using proprietary engines from Sachs and Ilo, Maico began building their own engines in the immediate post-war period and began expanding the range from 125cc to include both 150cc and 200cc models. Maico also competed in motocross and enduro events in Europe and the North America with great success and even won three 125cc Grand Prix events in 1972-1973 with Börje Jansson. At the other end of the spectrum, the 'Maicoletta' scooter and even more bizarre Maico Mobil were amongst the largest and most complex scooters ever made, the latter often described as a ?two-wheeled car? and featured enclosed front and rear wheels. Maico named its road bike range after winds and the Blizzard was a conventional two-stroke 250cc unit built in the mid-1950s, offered in both road going, with full weather and lighting equipment, and stripped motocross versions. Notable features of the Blizzard included hydraulic shock absorbers, a softly-sprung frame, swing arm, enclosed chain case and a directly illuminated speedometer. With a top speed of 72 mph, the Blizzard was a strong performer, with excellent acceleration and hill climbing ability and it survived in production from 1955 until 1962. Today Maico motorcycles enjoy a loyal following around the world and certain models are now sought after by collectors, while owners are well supported by various clubs, including one in the UK.
