Description
One of the all time classic road racing motorcycles , the AJS 7R was the ultimate 'Boy Racer' that won numerous races in both professional and amateur hands from the time of its introduction in 1948. Sporting an overhead camshaft 350cc single with a separate four-speed gearbox designed by Phil Walker, the 7R underwent constant development and changes implemented on the works race bikes were incorporated on the road version soon afterwards. These included a magnetic sump plug in 1949 then a new cam and piston plus raised compression ratio for 1951. For 1953 major updates included a new frame, 19-inch rims, improved brakes and modifications to both the engine (with 74-degree angle, roller rockers) and gearbox. The 1953 7R can easily be identified by the shorter seat and exhaust pipe and had an impressive race record - although the AJS factory withdrew from racing at the end of 1954, 7Rs continued winning and took victories at the Junior Manx TT races for three years in succession between 1961-1963. The AJS remains an impressive looking machine - from the wraparound oil tank to the signature megaphone exhaust, the bike simply exudes speed. One of the most highly prized classic British motorcycles of all, the 7R is a true dual purpose machine that can can be enjoyed on club rallies or at track meets.
