Harley-Davidson's long running Sportster range can trace its origins back to the Model K flat-heads of the early 1950s, with many of the same details (including the frame, tank and suspension) common to the first XL of 1957. However the Sportster had one major difference, an overhead-valve 45-degree V-twin engine, nicknamed the Ironhead, mounted directly onto the frame. Early XLs were powered by 883cc engines followed by a larger 1000cc model in 1972, while the four-speed transmission lasted until 1991.
