Description
The second-generation of Ford’s popular Anglia was released in 1949 with the English E494A vehicles differing from the Australian-built A494A Anglias in several ways. While the English market could only buy Anglias in two-door, four-seat saloon body style, Australian buyers could opt for several different models, including a four-door saloon, two-door tourer, two-door coupe-utility, or two-door roadster utility. However, all these variants shared frontal styling elements and the 90-inch wheelbase with the UK E494A Anglia. Another common factor between English and Australian vehicles was they were offered as the cheapest car for sale in both countries, providing basic automobile transport to many people for the first time. The second-generation Anglia was powered by the same 993cc 8hp in-line side-valve four-cylinder found in the original E04A/A04A first-generation Anglia models, dating back to 1939. In 1950 Ford added the option of a 10hp 1172cc four-cylinder unit to see the Anglia through until the third-generation 100E series debuted in 1953. Following the launch of the 100E Anglia/Prefect models the second-generation vehicles was sold in more basic trim levels as the 103E Popular until 1959, with 108,878 had been sold in total since 1949.
