Description
Popularised by the movie Easy Rider, the chopper movement really took off in the 1960s and continues to evolve today thanks to the popularity of builders like Jesse G James’ West Coast Choppers. With their heavily raked front forks and customised frames, the chopper is a uniquely American take on the traditional motorcycle, one ideally suited to the wide open spaces and vast freeway networks of the West Coast. Although every chopper is personalized to some degree, they invariably share certain basic ingredients like a V-twin engine, fat rear tyre, rigid-type frame and of course the heavily raked front-end. The modern chopper goes well beyond the traditional home-built method of construction, more often than not using factory kits and high quality billet aluminium parts. A relative newcomer on the scene, Hellbound Steel Motorcycles was established by Paul Cavello in Rancho Cucamonga, California to supply rollers and parts, becoming a fully-fledged OEM manufacturer in four short years. A new addition to the line-up for 2006, the Heathen featured Hellbound’s award winning single-sided swingarm, a low slung frame featuring 4-inch down tube stretch and 4-inch stretch in the backbone, 48 degree rake in the neck (with 6 degrees in the trees for a total rake of 54 degrees), S&S’s show polished 124-cid ‘fire breathing’ motor with compression releases, a 6-speed manual transmission, open belt drive, a 280 rear tyre, Brembo brakes and plenty of billet features. Every Hellbound was built to order and backed by a two-year factory warranty, with an impressive American and international dealer network.
