1961 Buick LeSabre Convertible (LHD)

Description

Buick’s range for 1961 was slimmed down, with beautiful body sculpting allowing for a more restrained application of exterior bright work and a single, narrow bright molding on the upper body was the only adornment.  Underneath, there was a brand new X-type frame with new rear suspension consisting of a three-link design, with the rear axle located to the frame by two outboard lower links and one upper stabiliser bar.  The suspension system consisted of coil springs front and rear, true-balance stabiliser bar, track bar and hydraulic shock absorbers all round while the drivetrain featured a 364-cid V8 and super smooth Turbine Drive automatic transmission.  With 10.25:1 compression ratio, a Carter four-barrel carburettor (with built-in de-icer) and an output of 250 horsepower, the LeSabre offered combined smooth power delivery with ample performance.  Steering was power assisted and of the standard recirculating ball-nut type, while the “Step-On” brake system comprised huge finned aluminium drums up front and air-cooled, finned cast iron brake drums at the rear, with power assist making the job of pulling up the Buick’s almost 2 tonnes seem simple.  The electrical system was of the Delco-Remy 12-volt variety and the tyres period correct 7.60-15 wide whitewalls.  Inside, the LeSabre was crammed with luxury features, including a “Mirro-Magic” instrument panel with a safety pad, Deluxe steering wheel, dual horns, dual armrests, electric windshield wipers and cigar lighter.  Perfect for show or as a weekend cruiser, the 1961 Buick LeSabre is an attractive, collectible American convertible and a rare sight on Australian roads.
