1984 Holden HDT VK Commodore SS Sedan

Regarded by many as the most desirable Brock Commodore of all, HDT’s VK was initially launched on August 28, 1984 with two models, the SS and Group Three.  Sold in Asteroid Silver and Alpine White, the SS featured colour-coded bumpers plus special decals, while the Group Three came with an aggressive body kit consisting of front and rear spoilers, side skirts and a new grille.  A bonnet scoop and splitters on the front wings were popular options and the SS rode on 15-inch alloys whereas the Group Three had Aero 16-inch rims.  All HDT SS/Group Three cars featured the same light blue cloth upholstery, with sports Scheel bucket seats, a Momo steering wheel and HDT gearstick knob, plus a Brock signature 40 watt sound system and Cobra burglar alarm.  HDT’s latest muscle car came with a tuned 5-litre V8 under the bonnet, equipped with a four-barrel carburettor and developing 177 kW at 4800 rpm and 419 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm.  With enlarged cylinder head ports and gas-flowed combustion chambers, the V8 was also treated to larger inlet and exhaust valves.  HDT offered at choice of three transmissions: a three-speed auto, the M21 four-speed manual or the optional Borg-Warner T-5 five-speed with a 3.08 limited slip differential.  Although official build figures for the SS aren’t known, just 200 Group Three and 500 Group A VK Commodores were made by HDT.  Performance figures remained impressive, with 0-100 km/h taking 7.6 seconds and the quarter-mile dash some 14.9 seconds.  As the period ads said, “Body by Holden.  Soul by Brock” and HDT’s VK Commodores are certainly amongst the most desirable and sought after Aussie muscle cars of the 1980s.
