The Nissan Bluebird is a model name that dates back to 1957 and is among the Japanese maker’s most famous nameplates. The Australian-made Bluebird was based on the Bluebird 910 design, the last of the rear-wheel drive Bluebirds. Featuring simple, crisp and clean square lines, it was otherwise mechanically based on its 810-model predecessor, known here as the Datsun 200B. Australia had the 910 from 1981 to 1984 with the L20B engine, and from 1985 to 1986 with the CA20S engine. The Australian car was a locally produced lower-spec version of the Japanese model with no independent rear suspension, electronic fuel injection, or (in mainstream production) turbo versions. However, the cars were also offered in a sporty version, known as the TR-X. The main difference between these Bluebirds and the base models were sporty trim, including an optional front air dam, centre mount aerial, 15-inch alloy wheels, a small rear spoiler, map lights and seats with better bolstering. Mechanically, there were the rear disc brakes which were shared with the GLX model and a 3.9:1 diff ratio compared to the standard 3.7:1. What makes our TRX extra-special is that it is one of just six ‘promotional’ models built by the Nissan racing team, with an HKS turbo fitted to the engine and further handling refinements.
