Buick’s 1959 line-up featured all-new styling and series nomenclature, the base LeSabre joined by the sporting Invicta (replacing the Century Series 60) and luxurious Electra. Radical blade fins swept all the way from the hood ornament along the sculpted bodywork and the Invicta was distinguished by a rocker panel molding and special badges, while much was made of the new Magic Mirror paint finishes in Buick’s sales literature. The Invicta’s interior benefited from plusher trim, the ‘Balfour’ cloth upholstery available in four colour combinations. Foamtex seat cushions, an electric clock, the Deluxe steering wheel, instrument panel cover and full wheel trims were all standard features on the Invicta line, which consisted of five distinct body styles ranging from the basic six-passenger sedan to both two and four-door hardtops boasting the new wraparound “Vista-Panoramic” windshield design, a convertible and the station wagon. The Invicta was powered by Buick’s super smooth Wildcat 445 V8: displacing 401 cubic inches, with a 10.5:1 compression ratio and rated at 325 horsepower, the motor was capable of effortless performance, matched to the excellent Twin Turbine Dynaflow transmission. Options included a three-speed auto box and Posi-traction rear end, along with power steering and power brakes, plus a host of convenience features. Billed as the “Equipoise” chassis, the new box-section K-frame featured new coil springs and dampers, ball-joint front suspension and a stabilizer bar. Buick produced just 20,156 Series 4600 Invicta four-door hardtops in 1959 and these glamorous American classics are in high demand with collectors today.
