Replacing the long-running XJ-S range in 1996, the new XK8 debuted a new all-alloy 4.0-litre V8 engine in two body styles; a coupe and convertible. This was coupled to a smooth-shifting ZF-sourced five-speed automatic transmission. Sleek and modern, the exterior was designed by Ian Callum (who also penned the contemporary Aston Martin DB7) and were well equipped with cruise control, air conditioning, CD player and parking sensors in some models. The XK8 was billed as a 2+2 Grand Tourer with a top speed of 250km/h yet retaining the usual Jaguar refinements to the ride and noise levels. Relatively rare on Australian roads, today they provide refined, brisk motoring and offer solid value for money.
