1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Convertible (RHD)

Description

The radical fourth-generation Camaro made its debut as a 1993 model, with the aerodynamic body initially available only as a coupe.  With many of the compound curved panels formed from molded composite plastics, the new Camaro certainly looked futuristic but underneath retained the traditional front engine/rear drive layout, albeit with a revised chassis structure to improve rigidity, along with new front suspension.  Available with a choice of engines, the base Camaro was fitted with a V6 but the same LT1 350-cid V8 found in the Corvette proved a popular option and buyers opting for the small-block V8 (the same unit that had powered Camaros for the best part of three decades) had a choice of four-speed automatic transmission or the Borg-Warner T56 six-speed manual.  Changes to the automatic transmission (now electronically controlled) and the adoption of sequential port fuel injection further improved the Camaro in 1994, along with more standard equipment, including air bags, CD player with coaxial speakers and floodlit interior lighting.  For 1998 the LT1 motor was replaced with the all-new 5.7-litre LS1 rated at 306 horsepower, featuring an alloy cylinder block and numerous improvements.  Other changes included minor revisions to the steering and brakes, while the frontal styling was also revamped and a total of 48,495 Camaros were built in 1998, in both coupe and convertible body styles.  The Z28 performance package added disc brakes all round (with ABS) and the Camaro remained king of the muscle car category, achieving a top speed of around 260 km/h, along with an equally impressive 0-100 km/h time of under six seconds.
