Description
The LJ Torana was introduced in February 1972 and remained in production until March 1974, with some 81,453 examples rolling off the production lines at Acacia Ridge, Brisbane and Elizabeth, Adelaide in this period. A facelifted version of the previous LC model, the LJ had revised suspension and improved sound deadening and was offered in either two or four door configurations. The buyer had a choice of engines ranging from 1200cc, 1600cc or 1760cc four-cylinder units through to the 2250cc, 2850cc and 3300cc six-cylinder engines that could be teamed with either a three-speed column shift manual, a four-speed floor-mounted manual or the three-speed GM Trimatic automatic. The SL, or Super Luxury, version only came in six-cylinder guise and offered luxuries like woodgrain facia, full carpeting, buckets seats with front headrests and even a cigarette lighter. The LJ Torana - in GTR XU-1 guise - was Holden's main weapon at Mount Panorama and Peter Brock scored a memorable win against the bruising Falcon GT-HOs in the Hardie-Ferodo 500 in 1972.
