Description
Locost is the name of a “Replica” type Lotus 7 Clubman sports car devised to be home-built by enthusiasts in the mid- ‘90s. The design was popularised in the Haynes Manuals book Build your own sports car for as little as £250 by Ron Champion and saw examples built from these plans produced around the world, including Australia. The Locost design was intended to be built from scratch and features a space frame chassis which is usually welded together from mild steel 1in x 1in (25 mm × 25 mm) square tubing. Front suspension is usually double wishbone with coil spring struts. The rear is traditionally a live axle, but many have variants including independent rear suspension or De Dion tube. Body panels are usually fiberglass nose and wings and aluminium side panels, though these, like the chassis, has been produced in kit form by various suppliers to meet the demand. Thus, every Locost is different, and specced according to the resources, and desires of each respective builder.
