Nicknamed ‘MAD 1’ by its creator, regional automotive engineering business Mylon Automotive Design (hence M.A.D), this Concept 1 clubman is the company’s kit car offering. Looking like a cross between an original Lotus 7 clubman of the late ‘50s, the more modern take on that called the Nota Fang of the ‘70s and even the Bolwell Ikara of the ‘80s, the Concept 1 is built on a 1in x 1.6mm tube steel frame with a crush plate under the seating position. Integral to this steel spaceframe is its structural ATL composite glass reinformed doorless open-top clubman bodywork. It is powered by a 2.2 litre General Motors Ecotech four-cylinder engine with standard tune and ECU, which is Euro4 emissions compliant. The engine’s hooked up to a five-speed manual transmission from an American 2.0 turbo Ecotech rear drive sedan. The differential, axles and collapsible steering column are from a Ford Sierra, the uprights are bespoke milled-from-billet custom designs, while the rear hubs are BA Falcon, the upper front balljoints EA Falcon and the lower front balljoints VZ Commodore. Coilover shock absorbers are by AV and the tailshaft is custom, while the disc brakes are a mix of Nissan and Falcon components. The aluminium fuel tank is custom made and the wheels 18in alloys. Inside, the Concept 1 is trimmed in black and red vinyl, with a typically high centre console separating the two deep-dish bucket seats. Despite the broad spread of component sources, they all come together well in this modern take on a very traditional sports car design.
