One of the most enduring of automotive legends is the Cobra, created by Texan Carroll Shelby in the early ‘60s by combining the US muscle of the Ford small-block V8 engine with a suitably modified English sports car chassis. The original 289 Cobra was a winner both on the street and track, taking on - and beating - Europe's best in the mid- ‘60s. The original small-block V8 was later replaced by the 427ci big-block and, with the bodywork suitably pumped-up, the Cobra delivered shattering performance. With original examples commanding huge prices around the collector car world, an entire industry of Cobra replicas has developed over the years. Cobra recreations are blank slates for their owners, meaning they can choose virtually any powertrain and modifications of their liking while retaining the iconic shape. There are obvious advantages to owning a replica of a classic car. First, it does not cost a fortune (only the fortunate few can afford a real Cobra these days). Second, one does not have to worry about damaging an irreplaceable piece of history. Besides, it can be modified to the owner’s desire with no guilty conscience and provides a great deal of fun to be had by an owner at track days, club events or simply those wanting to enjoy the driving experience again.
