Subaru’s Impreza WRX was the undoubted cult car of the 1990s. Launched in 1993, the WRX redefined the compact sports sedan (and hatch) market and allowed its manufacturer to secure a glorious run of victories in the World Rally Championship.
The combination of all-wheel drive, turbocharging and a horizontally opposed engine set it aside from all would-be rivals. The WRX was released locally in sedan and hatch form during the first quarter of 1994 at the bargain basement price of $39,990. With 155kW from its 2.0-litre turbo engine, the lightweight Subey embarrassed every HSV V8-powered offering on performance and could equal the Porsche 911 and BMW M3 in the standing 400-metre sprint. The earliest cars had rather cheap trim and the facelift for 1997 brought a much more attractive interior design, complete with rally-style bucket seats trimmed in very dark navy with contrasting red as well as fashionable white-faced instruments. For MY99 (second half 1998 production), 16-inch wheels were introduced.
