Jaguar tasked the XJ40 with the almost impossible job of replacing the ultimate expression of the original XJ6, the beautiful Pininfarina-revised Series III. When the XJ40 was finally readied for market in September 1986, executives acknowledged that in benchmark testing, the greatest challenge to its new car was the Series III. The XJ40 landed in Australia the following year. Its 3.6-litre six struggled to equal the performance of the old ‘dirty’ 4.2, but fuel economy was almost unbelievably improved, thanks not only to the more efficient engine but the long awaited four-speed automatic transmission.
