Competing with the likes of Ducati’s 900SS V-twin and other European sports bikes, Yamaha launched the TRX850 on the Japanese market in 1995, the tubular trellis frame closely mimicked its Italian rival while the parallel-twin engine was derived from the unit found in the TDM850. Using five valves-per-cylinder technology, the DOHC liquid-cooled motor featured dry sump lubrication, a 270-degree crank (giving similar characteristics to an air-cooled V-twin) and was rated at 79 bhp. Fitted with a half fairing and clip-on handlebars, the TRX was lighter, lower and more sporting than its TDM stablemate, had higher compression, a lightened flywheel and larger airbox, plus larger 38mm Mikuni carburettors. The five-speed gearbox was also lifted from the TDM but used closer gear-ratios for better acceleration. Sold around the world from 1996 onwards, production of the TRX850 only lasted until 2000; never a big seller due to the high price, finding one is getting harder as the number of roadworthy examples gets smaller every year. The TRX850 received a positive reception from the motorcycling press, with Motorcycle News noting the TRX was “the best-kept secret in motorcycling” and a “forgotten gem” and they represent exceptional value for money on the second-hand bike market.
