The Porsche 901 was one of the stars of the 1963 Frankfurt Salon. But Peugeot had an automotive patent on all three-digit sets of numbers with a central zero, so the name was changed to the doubtless more evocative ‘911’. No other motoring sub-brand has enjoyed such an unbroken span of history as the 911 and, while every single version is desirable, it is often the earlier examples that are more coveted by collectors. The first 911 Targa model was offered in 1967, and featured the familiar rollover bar, but instead of the more common fixed rear window, a ‘soft window’ section with clear plastic that could be attached or removed was fitted. In all, only some 718 examples of the Targa was built in 1967. From 1968, the better recognized fixed-window Targa was introduced, and the soft window was still available, but discontinued in the 1969 model year, although it is understood that a handful were still ordered by customers as special order up until 1971 model year.
