Honda’s first-generation Accord was launched in mid-1976 as a three-door hatchback built on an extended Civic platform, powered by a 1.6 litre (51kW) four-cylinder CVCC engine. It was an immediate success and was one of the first Japanese sedans with features like cloth seats, a tachometer, intermittent wipers, and an AM/FM radio as standard equipment. A year later Honda added a four-door sedan (on the same wheelbase) to the range, and power increased to 54kW. The Accord quickly established a strong following and sales success in export markets, particularly in Australia and the U.S. Initially, a five-speed manual or two-speed automatic transmission had been offered, the latter replaced by a three-speed in 1980, and a four-speed in 1983. This original Accord went on to have numerous running changes to cosmetics, trim, and mechanicals through to 1982, when it was replaced by the second-generation Accord … though stylistically the changes wrought were evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
