1974 Datsun 1200 Utility

Assembled locally in Australia from 1970 to 1973, Datsun's 1200 series was badged as the Sunny in Japan and certain other overseas markets, replacing the original 1000 as the smallest model in Datsun's line-up. Sold in sedan, coupe, station wagon and utility versions, the 1200 has become something of a cult car in Australia in recent years. A competitor for Toyota's Corolla, the B110-series 1200 retained the traditional front engine/rear drive layout that made it so popular with rally drivers of the day, the MacPherson strut front suspension giving safe, predictable handling. The compact dimensions and light weight of the Datsun also played a part, as did the lively A12 four-cylinder motor, which received high praise from road testers at the time. Road & Track commented in its November 1970 road test "How can a little 4-cylinder engine, working hard, remain so smooth and quiet?" In standard form the A12 developed 68 hp at 6000 rpm, with the higher compression GX version rated at 83 hp at 6400 rpm and the motor certainly responded well to tuning. Indeed, there are now numerous forums and specialists around the country dedicated to modifying all aspects of the Datsun 1200. Early Japanese cars have become all the rage in recent times and finding a time-warp example like this has become increasingly difficult, with enthusiasts scouring the back streets and garages of Australia in the hope of locating such a car.
