Ford's 1949-1951 model range represented the Blue Oval's first all-new post-war design, built around a new chassis and boasting an aerodynamic, cleanly-styled new shape. Based on the American model, these new models were also produced in Australia and offered in four-door sedan and two-door coupe utility body styles. The coupe utility was a uniquely Australian variant, developed by Ford Australia, which could boast 80 per cent local content by 1950. Underneath, the models used the same six-cylinder and flathead V8 engines as previously, but the transverse rear springs were replaced by longitudinal springs for a much-improved ride. Two trim levels were available in 1949, the base level and Custom, but for 1950 these became the Deluxe and Custom Deluxe respectively, with only minor changes to exterior styling and equipment. For 1951 models, however there were no major improvements except for the revised grille, which now featured two ‘spinner’ motifs in the grille replacing the previously used single ‘spinner’. This styling affectation gave the '51 Ford a unique look that became iconic, giving birth to its ‘twin spinner’ nomenclature that saw it become an instant classic. Buyers had a choice of the 226ci six-cylinder (with a single barrel carburettor and 95 horsepower) or the 239ci V8 (with a two-barrel carburettor and 100 horsepower), plus the new for 1951 two-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission, a $92 optional extra across the range. Twin Spinner Fords have long been popular with modifiers and customisers around the world, particularly here in Australia, where they have an almost cult following.
