Description
The Oldsmobile brand had returned to Australian shores in 1934 after being dropped through the Depression years. According to the Oldsmobile Club, complete assembled six and eight-cylinder chassis and drivelines were imported from the States, with Holden forming the appropriate body (either Sedan or Coupe) and matching to the chassis in the appropriately ordered colour. Fawn leather trim was fitted to both six-cylinder sedans and coupes, with brown leather optional in the eight-cylinder sedan (no coupes were offered in this form). General Motors-Holden had completed its own vehicle assembly plant in Port Melbourne and had also installed a power press into its Elizabeth South Australia body facility. This meant local assembly of American GM products was in full swing with Buick, LaSalle and Cadillac models also being offered locally by the late ‘30s. These locally assembled GM vehicles played an important part in the development of the Australian car industry as a whole and are much revered with their ability to provide reliable, stylish transport with good club support and American aftermarket parts supply.
