Replacing the long-running XJ-S range in 1996, the new XK8 and its supercharged XKR sister debuted a new all-alloy 4.0-litre V8 engine in two body styles; a coupe and convertible. This was coupled to a smooth-shifting ZF-sourced five-speed automatic transmission. Sleek and modern, the exterior was designed by Ian Callum (who also penned the contemporary Aston Martin DB7) and were well equipped with leather and wood trim, cruise control, air conditioning, CD player and parking sensors in some models. The XK range received a mechanical update in 2002 with engines enlarged to 4.2 litres for more performance in both the normally-aspirated XK8 and supercharged XKR models. The front headlights were also updated with clear lenses, while there were new exterior colours, badging and wheels. The models were then further revised in 2004 including new wheel designs, bigger front and rear spoilers, and a redesigned grille. Rare on Australian roads, the XKR today provides refined, brisk motoring with Jaguar levels of ride and handling, at what looks like very solid value for money.
