Codenamed S14 and known as the Silvia in Japan, the 200SX first appeared in late 1993 on an all-new rear-wheel drive platform and first appeared in Australia the following year. Available in three distinct trim levels, the Sports Limited came with 16-inch alloys, air conditioning, remote central locking, power windows, power mirrors, a four speaker radio/cassette player and alarm as standard. The Sport version added a leather gearshift knob and steering wheel plus a rear spoiler while the Luxury featured a six speaker CD player, front fog lights, passenger side SRS airbag, glass sunroof and front spoiler as standard. Under the bonnet Nissan’s SR20DET four-cylinder engine received beefed-up internals, the latest NVCS variable cam timing system and a larger T28 turbocharger (with air to air intercooler) to bump output to a healthy 147 kW at 6000rpm and 265Nm at 4800rpm. The S14’s rear-drive chassis has long been regarded as one of the finest handling coupes of its generation, with excellent suspension, steering and the bonus of a limited-slip diff. Both automatic and manual transmissions were available and Nissan released an updated version in late 1996 with revised headlamps, bumpers and grille. Touted as a future classic for some time, the S14 200SX has enjoyed a cult following in Australia for years and finding a good, unmodified example with low mileage is becoming increasingly rare.
