Maserati’s Mexico was a four-seater coupé produced by the Italian automobile manufacturer between 1966 and 1972. It was based on the second series of the original Quattroporte model, powered by the same 4.2 or 4.7 litre V8 engines. Its design derived from a 2+2 prototype shown on the Vignale stand at the 1965 Salone di Torino, which was later sold to Mexican president Adolfo López Mateos, hence the model’s name. The production Maserati Mexico debuted globally in 1966 at the Paris Motor Show, initially powered by a 4.7 litre V8 with four twin-choke 38 DCNL5 Weber carburetors rated at 290hp, with a top speed of around 250 km/h. The Mexico was also made available with the 4.2 litre V8 engine rated at 260hp shortly after and was the first production Maserati to be fitted with ventilated disc brakes on all four wheels. The Mexico’s interior was luxurious with rich leather seating for four adults, electric windows, wooden dashboard, iodine headlights and air conditioning as standard. Automatic transmission, power steering and a radio were optional, and the 4.7 litre version was fitted with Borrani chrome wire wheels. Across its six-year model life, Maserati built approximately 300 Mexicos with the 4.2 litre engine and 180 equipped with the 4.7 litre, making this model extremely rare today.
