The legendary Ford Mustang debuted its fifth generation at the 2004 North American International Auto Show on a brand-new platform, with "retro futurist" styling clearly inspired by the original ‘60s version of the first-generation ‘Ponycar’. Introduced for the 2005 model year, the `Stang remained true to the original concept under the skin as well, retaining the traditional front engine/rear drive layout and live rear axle. In base model form, the new Mustang was powered by a 4.0 litre SOHC V6 motor mated to the Tremec T-5 manual transmission, while the high-performance Mustang GT derivative employed the 4.6 litre modular V8 with alloy block and variable camshaft timing, cranking out a very healthy 300 bhp (224 kW). The V8 Mustang also used the stronger Tremec TR-3650 transmission. The GT package offered more standard equipment including sports seats, integrated fog lamps, halogen headlamps with integral indicator lights, a rear spoiler, stiffer suspension, and 17-inch painted aluminium wheels, along with anti-lock brakes and traction control. Allied with a comprehensive list of standard equipment, including power windows, power convertible top, traction cruise control and four-wheel disc brakes, the Mustang GT was very well appointed. Sold in both coupe and convertible models, the Mustang GT is a great drive and a return to the good old days of tarmac burning muscle cars, cracking zero to one hundred in just 5.5 seconds. The fifth generation Mustang was to that point without doubt the best car to wear the famous badge in decades.
